September 2001: David (The Lost Man)

Q5 - "No, I'm at a Scotland game..." Q2 - David in Molly Malones, Tallinn Q12 - A fine display of pink shirts Q3 - Don't look now lads, but the mothership's just landed behind you

1. First home and away matches?
My first game was Scotland v. Faroe Islands at Hampden, we won 5-1.

2. Best away trip?
Well they have all been good all for different reasons. But probably either Germany, Estonia or Poland. Although 2 of these trips have sadly been marred by ludicrous fiascos. i.e. missing boats & losing passports/credit cards.

3. Best foreign stadium visited?
Liked the Gerledome in Arnhem and the Parc Lescure in Bordeaux. Although we did go to the Amsterdam Arena after the Holland game and that was a fantastic stadium.

4. Best foreign pub/club visited?
I loved Irish Pub Schnoor in Bremen. Who could forget "Big Ben" in Bremen either.

5. Describe your usual match-day attire
Your usual bog standard kilt and Scotland top, although of late this has changed to Netley Abbey (Inverness Branch) 'official' merchandise. I have on occasion gone a bit crazy like other members of the tartan army members and dressed up a little. In Poland I had a very attractive "scream" style mask, if you look at the photos page with the picture of our row at half time, you'll see the very eerie sight of nobody in the stadium looking at the camera other than me with the scream mask on (click here for photo). I have also had an inflatable Champagne bottle acquired from Clarkston Chris and also an inflatable mobile phone that i got from... somewhere. One other thing that we USED TO take to games was our Inverness Caley Jags flag. That no longer comes on trips with us as it is festering in a bag in Allan's attic covered in what remains of the vomit from that awful night in Zagreb.

6. Is there anywhere you have seen Scotland play that you would like to go back to?
Would like to go back to Tallinn in Estonia and all of the World Cup venues. Of course would like to see us play in Croatia again, just so I can see what a game looks like there.

7. Where have you have seen Scotland play that you would NOT like to return to?
Wouldn't really like to go back to Rimini/San Marino, although if it was in summer I would.

8. And where do you want to go to (but haven't yet)?
Quite a few places. Lets think, second round of a major tournament would be good! But countries I'd like to see Scotland would be Spain, America, Canada, Iceland and of course Japan and Korea.

9. Who's the best Scottish player that you have actually seen?
Well I've not really been around with the "greats" of Scottish football, although Andy Goram, John Collins and Paul Lambert have all been good players. I have met Danny McGrain at Hampden before a Queens Park - Caley Thistle game and I've also met Craig Brown and his daughter oooops sorry I mean girlfriend outside a pub in Inverness. Of the current team I'd say Don Hutchison is the best player we have just now.

10. Who's the best opposing player you have actually seen?
Well there have been a few. Pavel Nedved of Lazio/Czech Republic, Edgar Davids/Patrick Kluivert of Holland and Lillian Thuram/Patrick Vieria of France.

11. Who would you most like to see succeed Craig Brown?
Its got to be either Alex Ferguson or George Burley down at Ipswich. Certainly would NOT like Archie Knox in charge of the national side.

12. Favourite Scottish home and away kits of all time?
Well my favourite top is the France 98 home shirt, just pushing the Mexico 86 home shirt into second place. My favourite away is the yellow Mexico shirt, just pushing the most recent pink effort into second place.

13. … And your least favourite?
Well the home shirt we used for qualifying for France 98 and also that tartan one is pretty crappy too, sorry Chris. The worst away top and possibly one of the worst shirts of all time would have to be that shirt a few years back we wore against Greece a few years back. A terrible white shirt with shambolic blue/purple lightening strikes down the front. In a word, awful.

14. What is your favourite and least favourite Scotland chant/song?
Probably "walk a million miles for one of your goals" because when i was a kid watching Scotland at home, this song always got me up for the games. I did like "carnival de Paris" at the world cup, but like everything it has been hijacked and ruined by the old firm.

Least - Stand up/sit down if you hate England. Gets boring after the 10th time its started by little kids behind the goals at Hampden. Also I hate Mexican Waves at home games too.

15. Which have been the highest and lowest points of supporting Scotland?
The highest point will have to be when the goal went in against England in November 99. The lowest point coming a few days earlier at Hampden where we totally let ourselves down. Also the away game against the Czechs was bad and so was the last minute Belgian goal in March at Hampden.

16. Favourite domestic stadium?
I'm in no way a Rangers fan, but I've got to admit Ibrox is a very impressive stadium.

17. Best domestic match ever attended?
Call me sad but Cowdenbeath 3 Caley Thistle 4 We were 3-1 down with 10 mins left and we came back to win 4-3, just amazing. Saying that beating Celtic was alright too.

18. Favourite chant/song heard at a domestic match?
"So fucking easy" sung at Celtic park when Caley were winning 3-1.

19. Best domestic pub/club?
Number 27 in Inverness, my favourite watering hole in my home town. But overall it has to be "the Scotia" no explanation needed.

20. What are your pet hates?
Old Firm fans who think there side is going to win the Champions League in the coming season, Jim Traynor for his constant ridiculous comments about Scotland/Craig Brown and Scotland fans, constant media coverage of the Old Firm, people wearing club shirts at Scotland games and there is numerous other things but that's all I can mention on here.

21. What makes you chuckle?
Any team beating Rangers.

22. You're stranded on a remote island in the Hebrides. Before the ship went down you managed to salvage some belongings (to help you pass the time until you're rescued) including…

1 book? Live and Let Die
1 magazine? FHM
1 album? Its Great When Your Straight, YEAH by Blackgrape
1 film? Shawshank Redemption, Money Pit or Meet the Parents
1 beer? Becks
1 spirit? .Irn Bru?
And 1 famous member of the opposite sex ? Louise Nurding
